Bushland, Texas– Cielo Wind Power, LP of Austin, Texas- the largest independent wind power company in the United States- awarded nine $1,000 Earth Stewardship Scholarships at their annual Earth Day Wind Ball outside of Amarillo, Texas on Saturday, April 19th. The Earth Steward Scholarships were awarded to nine graduating seniors from independent school districts throughout Texas. Winners include: Cydney Friemel (Vega High School), Elisabeth Johnson (Adrian High School), Ashley Sawyer (Robert Lee High School), Shea Craig (White Deer High School), Chad Barkley (Groom High School), Robert Gillis (McCamey High School), Puja Bhakta (Ozona High School), Claire Boyd (Pampa High School), Katherine Gray (Panhandle High School).

“The stewardship scholarship is a great way for Cielo to give back to local communities and recognize outstanding students demonstrating a commitment to land stewardship,” said Walt Hornaday, President of Cielo Wind Power. “We are proud to help young Earth stewards achieve their goals.”

In addition to writing an essay, each candidate was asked to sign a graduation pledge stating, “I pledge to explore and take into account the social and environmental consequences of any job I consider and will work to improve these aspects of any organizations for which I work and in any enterprise I start.”

Cielo was excited to bring an eco-friendly event to the Panhandle where they have been active in wind power development since 2000. Two hundred native ponderosa pine seedlings were given to attendees; bamboo cutlery and place settings were used to serve an organic beef tenderloin dinner while Two Tons of Steel provided musical entertainment. Cielo was honored with the presence of Earth Day stewardship recipients and their families, along with representatives from local schools and businesses, land owners, county judges and commissioners.
