A local high school student was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from a Texas-based wind energy company.

Kaitlin Rae Lopez, a senior at Tucumcari High School, was awarded one of the 2009 Cielo Wind Power Earth Stewardship Scholarship, by Cielo Wind Power, LP of Austin.

“The stewardship scholarship is a great way for Cielo to give back to local communities and recognize outstanding students who demonstrate a commitment to land stewardship,” said Walt Hornaday, president of Cielo Wind Power, in the press release announcing the award.

Applicants had to write an essay describing their responsibility as earth stewards and how they will continue to pursue that responsibility in their education and career plans.

“It is a great honor to be chosen out of so many applicants,” Lopez said. “My essay was about how my choice to attend Northern Arizona University was based on their environmental friendly campus.”

Lopez chose NAU after she attended a college day at the University with her mother, T eresa Salazar.

“I instantly fell in love with the campus and the surrounding communities,” Lopez said. “For me it just seemed like the right choice.”

The campus at NAU has some of the most energy efficient buildings, which heavily influenced her decision, Lopez said. The campus also has many environmental friendly programs such as campus-wide recycling.

“The environment is very important to me,” Lopez said in her essay. “NAU is the perfect place for me to pursue my goals to make this world a better place to live.”
Lopez said she will pursue nursing at NAU because she wants to help people and give back to society.

Cielo Wind Power supports students and education by pledging $20,000 in scholarships to school districts throughout Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma. The award recipients were honored at Cielo’s annual Earth Day Wind Ballo held outside Amarillo, Texas, on April 18 as part of Earth Day and National Environmental Education week.
